Concrete Anchor Bolts

Concrete anchor bolts are used in construction to attach a structure or an object to concrete. There is a threaded end where a washer and nut can be attached to hold heavy loads. Large buildings, dams, and other structures are usually made with these bolts because of their strength in holding objects in place. When an object needs to be anchored in a sturdy manner, it is important to consider the material of the anchor, its length and diameter, and the proper type of anchor. There are many types of bolts that are used for attaching something to concrete, including wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, and drop-in anchors.

Each type of bolt has its own specific use that provides strength and prolongs the life of the object being attached. For instance, if an object is placed outdoors, it is necessary to use stainless steel anchors that will not rust since rusting causes the unsightly marks on concrete, and it also weakens the anchors so that they eventually become completely corroded. If something needs to be attached inside, then standard zinc plated concrete anchors can be used. It is also important to consider if the object that is being attached is made of pressure treated wood. If so, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized concrete anchors must be used to avoid erosion.

Eight inch anchor bolts are used for all types of construction, mainly to anchor something to poured concrete. There are pre-formed models available that have an angle design that holds securely. A common size is three-eighths of an inch in diameter and is made of galvanized steel. Another type is made of hot galvanized and has nuts and washers included. Because of the thickness of the galvanized coating, it is important to have galvanized nuts as well. They are resistant to corrosion and are good for exterior and coastal area use. There are other lengths of bolts available as well, from four inches to 16 inches long, but the eight inch length is commonly used because of its mid-length stability. There are many companies who manufacture this size, and they can be purchased either individually or in boxes.

Installation of the bolts is not difficult, but a certain procedure must be followed if it is to hold the object that you are attaching to concrete. One important factor is that the drill hole must be the proper size, and it also needs to be cleaned well before installing the bolt. Anchor bolt kits are sold with a washer and hex nut that must be put together before using it. After this step is completed, it is time to find the recommended drill bit size. A tip that many workers use is to wrap electrical tape around the drill bit to mark the drilling depth that will be needed. The bit is then placed into the drill, and while wearing safety glasses, the hole is drilled into the concrete. It is necessary to use a plumber’s brush to remove the concrete dust inside the hole. An air bulb is also used to blow out any remaining loose dust from the hole. Next, the anchor bolt is worked into the hole, tapping the hex nut with a hammer. A socket is then used to tighten the hex nut and to secure the bolt into the hole.

Eight-inch anchor bolts are far better at holding heavy loads than concrete screws that are made specifically for light loads. Although a concrete screw can be inserted and removed again, it generally does not have the strength to be used for construction purposes.
